FTP is a protocol used for uploading and downloading files.
Here is the breakdown of the url:

ftp://username:password@mysite.com

Where
ftp:// is the protocol
username:password combination is for authentication Mysite.com is the site you are trying to reach.

NOTE:
If you type the url, with your own information, it will bring you into the folder without prompts for authentication, because you are providing them on the url.

Using ftp with windows:

The easiest way to upload a file to an ftp site is to use the explorer, not to be confused with the internet explorer.
Here is how you do it:

  1. Double click MyComputer or open any folder.
  2. On the address bar type the ftp address. ie: ftp.printechny.com
  3. You will get a prompt for the username and password
  4. After you have logged in just drag and drop the files to and from the explorer window.

Using ftp with mac:

The mac is similar to the pc but the names are changed. On the mac you use the finder window.
Here is how you do it.

  1. Select Apple K or in the finder window,
    Window menu - Connect to Server
  2. On the address bar type the ftp address. ie: ftp.printechny.com
  3. You will get a prompt for the username and password
  4. After you have logged in just drag and drop the files to and from the finder window.
